Hope. Care. Cure.

About us

Hope. Care. Cure. These three simple words capture what we are here to do. That’s because at Seattle Children’s, compassionate care, breakthrough research and generous donors come together every day for the children, and the families, who need us. Over a century later, we continue to fight relentlessly to make sure there’s no such thing as “out of options” and to make sure kids who “didn't have a chance” can have the childhoods they deserve. At Seattle Children’s, we’re united by a compelling mission: We provide hope, care and cures to help every child live the healthiest and most fulfilling life possible. #HopeCareCure

In honor of World IBD Day, Seattle Children’s would like to thank the many researchers and providers who are working relentlessly to bring better treatment options to children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD is a lifelong condition with no current cures; once a person begins treatment, they continue treatment indefinitely. Seattle Children’s just launched a first-of-its-kind pediatric research study to better understand how and why inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) begins, with the goal of ultimately personalizing treatment plans for each patient. The Seattle STRIDE study, to be conducted exclusively at Seattle Children’s in partnership with the Allen Institute for Immunology, will harness single cell spatial transcriptomics and single cell multi-omics to understand how genes and other molecules behave in individual cells of patients who haven't been treated yet. Children with IBD typically must try multiple treatments and medications over time to find one that works best. Researchers hope that the information gained from the Seattle STRIDE study will not only improve treatment options, but also inform the decisions on how to treat each patient, reducing the number of treatments patients must undergo. The study is recruiting participants ages 6 to 18 years old over a three-year period. Learn more about the STRIDE study on https://lnkd.in/gb__TNEE

Ruby was born with biliary atresia, a liver condition that affects about 1 in 15,000 babies and can lead to liver failure without surgery. Her family turned to Seattle Children’s, which has the only pediatric liver transplant program in the Pacific Northwest, for care. Before she turned 4, Ruby spent over 300 days on the donor waitlist for a liver. As she waited, she found strength and comfort in books. One day, Ruby’s parents got a call from Seattle Children’s - the transplant team had a liver for her. Senior Vice President and Surgeon-in-Chief Dr. Andre Dick performed the surgery and provided care for Ruby. Soon after, Ruby’s family learned she qualified for a wish and Make-A-Wish Alaska and Washington came into their lives. Ruby hoped to create her very own children’s book - just like those books she relied on for support during her hospital stays. Ruby’s story creates hope, teaches kindness and inspires others to be brave. Today, Ruby is doing extremely well and adores her personalized children’s book. “My name is Celia, and I have celiac disease. It has always been a running joke with my family and classmates how my name is frighteningly like the spelling of the disease. I was diagnosed at age 3 at Seattle Children’s, such a long time ago that my memories are incredibly hazy. I remember only a photo — which my mother still has — of me sitting on a white hospital bed, looking unfazed and casually sucking on an orange-flavored popsicle. I joined Seattle Children’s Celiac Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) to help build our community and to help newly diagnosed patients and families. Being newly diagnosed is like being a toddler just learning to walk. You’re stumbling around and crying, trying to get your balance. We can be the people that holds their hands, wipe their tears and help them find the confidence to walk — then to run." Join Celia and CYLC members this Saturday, May 18 for the Celiac Guild’s Running from Gluten 5K. Funds raised will support the Celiac Disease Program. Learn more at https://bit.ly/3UM9U9J.
