Diagnosing Crohn’s disease in early childhood is critical as it can often be more severe in children than in adults. NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia is the only site in New York City participating in the CAMEO Study, a standard of care study that seeks to optimize therapies for children with this disease. Through the CAMEO Study, Dr. Neal LeLeiko , director of the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at #NYPMorganStanley, and other investigators around the country hope to understand why some children with Crohn’s disease who are treated with anti-TNF therapy achieve mucosal healing while others do not. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., and an estimated 230,000 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Adults at high risk for developing the disease due to their age and smoking history are eligible to be screened for lung cancer with a simple low-dose CT scan. To help connect those eligible for screening to a radiology center, #NYPWeillCornell radiologist Dr. Lauren Groner and her colleagues created LungCheck, an easy-to-use online resource that was funded by a grant from #NYP’s Dalio Center for Health Justice. Dr. Soojin Park, medical director of Critical Care Data Science and AI at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, has always been interested in the intersection of medicine and data science. Her passion led her to create something unique: the Continuous Monitoring Tool for Delayed Cerebral Ischemia (COSMIC) score. It’s a program that uses machine learning to help determine which patients in neurological intensive care units are at the highest risk of suffering a stroke. On the #AdvancesInCare podcast, Dr. Park discusses her research on using signal processing and machine learning to do predictive analytics and how that can impact neurocritical care. After receiving treatment for endometrial cancer, 62-year-old Mary Skehan is living life to the fullest! In June 2023, one year after receiving life-saving surgery, she jumped out of a plane to raise awareness for gynecological cancer and to honor her physician, Dr. Jason Wright, #NYPColumbia’s chief of gynecologic oncology. Her skydiving adventure raised $2,000 for research, and as she approaches her two-year anniversary of good health, she is already planning her next jump. "I want to experience life," says the Bronx native. “Others have not been as lucky as me. I appreciate every day.” This #WomensHealthMonth, read her story of resilience and learn about the importance of early cancer detection: https://nyphosp.co/3WyDt13 Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine

In 2013, Dr. Michael Vitale , chief of Pediatric Spine Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, led the creation of the Project for Safety in Spine Surgery. Over the years, the organization has developed guidelines to make both pediatric and adult spine surgery safer by averting surgical site infections. At #NYP’s annual Summit for Safety in Spine Surgery, taking place on May 31, updates to these guidelines will be discussed as well as hot topics in the field, including the use of technology to improve outcomes and new techniques to avoid complications. Ever since she was a child, Jo Marie Palazzo has been inspired by her mom, Theresa Bullicer, who worked as a nurse for 42 years. Jo Marie became a nurse practitioner at #NYPMorganStanley and her siblings also became nurses at #NYP. So, when Theresa was diagnosed with end stage renal disease and learned she needed a kidney transplant, Jo Marie did not hesitate to become a living donor. “There’s no way to repay my mom for all that she has done for me, but I wanted to be a blessing to her with what I was able to give,” says Jo Marie. In July 2023, mother and daughter had a successful transplant surgery at #NYPWeillCornell. Now retired, Theresa is enjoying her post-transplant life. In February, the two took a trip to the Philippines to celebrate their good health and transplant journey. This #MothersDay, Jo Marie and Theresa share their incredible story and how this experience has brought them closer together. https://nyphosp.co/3wwAmw4 #NationalNursesWeek Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine
