To create a high fidelity animal model for evaluating therapeutics, Sanford Health neuroscientist Dr. Jill Weimer and a team of researchers recently reported a new porcine model of CLN3 Batten disease in a study published in Disease Models & Mechanisms. They characterized the pigs’ potential to recapitulate the cellular trademarks of the disease and symptoms including vision loss, cognitive impairment, and motor decline. “These genetically modified models are extremely helpful,” said Weimer. “In the grand scheme of things for drug development, they’re going to be absolutely essential.” https://bit.ly/3vUwLHV
